Best Football Matches in Europe 2026/27: The Games Worth Travelling For
The best football matches in Europe are often worth planning an entire weekend around.
The 2026/27 season gives travelling supporters plenty of reasons to do exactly that. El Clásico returns to Barcelona, some of England’s biggest rivalries are spread across the season, Milan and Rome stage their own derbies, and the Champions League brings heavyweight European opponents together on nights that would be difficult to recreate anywhere else.
Choosing between them is not simply a question of which two teams are biggest. The stadium matters. The city matters. So does the rivalry, the competition and, sometimes, the chance to see a fixture that may not come around again for years.
If you are considering a football trip to Europe this season, these are the matches we would start with.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid: El Clásico
25 October 2026 | Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona
There are bigger stadiums, louder grounds and perhaps even fiercer local rivalries. But very few club matches carry the international pull of Barcelona against Real Madrid.
El Clásico is one of those fixtures that attracts people who would rarely consider travelling abroad for a league match. Part of that is obviously the football. Part of it is Barcelona itself.
A weekend in the city followed by Barcelona and Real Madrid at Camp Nou makes this considerably more than another La Liga fixture.
It is also the sort of match where choosing the right part of the stadium can make a real difference. Some supporters want to be as close to the pitch as possible. Others would rather sit higher and see the shape of the entire game.

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund
31 October 2026 | Allianz Arena, Munich
Six days after El Clásico comes another of Europe’s headline domestic fixtures.
Bayern Munich against Borussia Dortmund has developed its own identity. It does not need to imitate the century-old city derbies elsewhere in Europe. For much of the modern Bundesliga era, these have been the two German clubs most closely associated with the fight at the top.
Then there is the Allianz Arena.
It is a stadium that looks distinctive on television but makes considerably more sense when you are actually approaching it on matchday. Munich is also one of the easiest cities on this list to turn into a short football break.
For supporters looking for German football without sacrificing the scale of the occasion, this is a very strong choice.
AC Milan vs Inter: The Milan Derby
1 November 2026 | San Siro, Milan
Twenty-four hours later, attention moves to Milan.
Milan against Inter is different.
There is no neutral stadium separating the two clubs. They share the same ground, the same city and much of the same football history. Depending on which side is at home, the colours and details change, but the setting does not.
San Siro is part of the reason this match deserves a place so high on the list.
Modern stadiums can be more comfortable and technologically advanced, but few European grounds have its visual character. For somebody combining football with a city break, Milan also works exceptionally well. You can spend most of the weekend nowhere near a football stadium and still finish it at one of the continent’s great derbies.
If seeing the San Siro is already on your football list, the Derby della Madonnina is probably the match to do it with.
Liverpool vs Manchester United
22 November 2026 | Anfield, Liverpool
Not every great English rivalry is a derby.
Liverpool and Manchester United represent two cities with their own history and two clubs accustomed to measuring themselves by trophies rather than simply local superiority.
That gives this fixture a different edge.
Anfield is compact compared with some of Europe’s newer super-stadiums, and that is part of the attraction. On a major matchday, the occasion begins well before kick-off.
This is also a good example of why anyone travelling for Premier League football should keep some flexibility in their plans. Broadcast selections and competition schedules can move fixtures from their originally published slots. The Premier League itself warns that changes can occur, particularly as clubs progress in European and domestic competitions. Premier League
For a football-first weekend rather than a conventional city break, Liverpool against Manchester United is difficult to overlook.
Arsenal vs Manchester City
29 November 2026 | Emirates Stadium, London
This one has become far more significant over recent seasons.
Arsenal against Manchester City is not built on geography. Its appeal comes from what happens at the top of the table.
For a visitor, the Emirates also offers something useful: a major Premier League match without having to build the entire weekend around getting in and out of a remote stadium area. London gives you options before and after the game, and public transport makes it relatively straightforward to combine football with the rest of the city.
For supporters interested in the sporting side of the 2026/27 title race, this could prove more important than several traditional derbies.
Tottenham vs Arsenal: The North London Derby
5 December 2026 | Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London
A week later, London changes character completely.
Tottenham against Arsenal is personal in a way Arsenal against Manchester City is not.
The clubs are separated by only a few miles, supporters live and work alongside each other, and the result follows both sides long after the final whistle.
Tottenham Hotspur Stadium adds another reason to consider this particular edition. It is one of Europe’s most modern football grounds and one of the best examples of what a new stadium can be without feeling completely detached from its club.
If you want a Premier League match where the rivalry is immediately obvious even to somebody visiting for the first time, the North London Derby belongs near the top of the list.
Champions League Nights Worth Travelling For
League football gives you rivalries. The Champions League gives you matchups that sometimes disappear for years.

Barcelona vs Manchester City
8 December 2026 | Spotify Camp Nou, Barcelona
Barcelona and Manchester City is the kind of fixture the Champions League was designed to produce.
There is no local rivalry to sell here. It does not need one. Two clubs associated with possession football, enormous expectations and some of the most recognisable players in the game meeting at Camp Nou is enough.
For somebody who wants Champions League football rather than a domestic derby, this is one of the most attractive December options.
Arsenal vs Real Madrid
9 December 2026 | Emirates Stadium, London
One night later comes another.
Real Madrid’s relationship with the Champions League hardly needs explaining. That alone changes the feel of an away appearance at a major European ground.
Arsenal hosting Madrid at the Emirates gives London-based visitors an unusually strong midweek option. It also has the advantage of being a fixture you cannot simply assume will appear again next season.
That unpredictability is part of the appeal of travelling for European football.
Inter vs Liverpool
19 January 2027 | San Siro, Milan
January brings Liverpool to the San Siro.
For travelling supporters, this is almost the ideal Champions League combination: two historically significant European clubs, a stadium with its own identity and a city that works perfectly well for a two or three-night trip.
If the Milan Derby is impossible for your dates, Inter against Liverpool offers a very different but equally compelling reason to visit the San Siro.
Manchester United vs Bayern Munich
20 January 2027 | Old Trafford, Manchester
Some European fixtures immediately bring old matches to mind.
Manchester United against Bayern Munich is one of them.
The clubs have crossed paths at important moments before, but nostalgia is not the main reason to go. Old Trafford under the lights for a Champions League match between United and Bayern is enough on its own.
For supporters who prefer European competition to a domestic league weekend, this may be Manchester’s strongest fixture of the winter.
Lazio vs Roma: The Derby della Capitale
13 December 2026 | Stadio Olimpico, Rome
Rome’s derby is not the polished option on this list.
That is exactly why some supporters will choose it.
Lazio and Roma share the Stadio Olimpico but very little affection. The Derby della Capitale carries the tension of a rivalry contained within one city, and the stadium can feel completely different depending on which supporters control the occasion.
Rome also gives travelling fans something few football destinations can match. You could build an entire trip around the city and regard the match as the final event rather than the sole purpose of visiting.
If atmosphere and local rivalry matter more to you than simply watching the highest-ranked teams, Lazio against Roma deserves serious consideration.
Manchester United vs Liverpool at Old Trafford
23 January 2027 | Old Trafford, Manchester
The reverse fixture gives travellers another way to experience the Liverpool–Manchester United rivalry.
This time the setting is Old Trafford.
The difference matters. Seeing the same rivalry in Liverpool and Manchester is not the same experience with the teams merely swapping shirts.
If Manchester works better for your travel dates, the January meeting is the one to consider.
Arsenal vs Liverpool
6 February 2027 | Emirates Stadium, London
By February, league matches begin to carry a little more weight.
Points lost earlier in the season can be recovered. Points lost in February and March start to feel expensive.
Arsenal against Liverpool also offers an alternative for somebody who wants a major Premier League fixture in London without necessarily choosing a derby.
Both clubs travel with expectations. Both expect to compete near the top. And the Emirates is straightforward to incorporate into a weekend in the capital.
Manchester City vs Manchester United: The Manchester Derby
20 March 2027 | Etihad Stadium, Manchester
By late March, the table is beginning to tell the truth.
That makes the Manchester Derby particularly interesting.
City against United is already one of England’s biggest fixtures, but a March meeting can arrive with consequences beyond the rivalry itself: title ambitions, European qualification or simply the opportunity to damage the other club’s season.
For visitors, Manchester is also one of Europe’s easiest cities to understand as a football destination. Two major clubs sit within the same city, and football is visible well beyond the stadium gates.
If your trip is specifically about English football, this is one of the dates worth circling.
Arsenal vs Tottenham: The Return North London Derby
1 May 2027 | Emirates Stadium, London
And then there is May.
A derby early in the season brings emotion. A derby in May can bring consequences.
Arsenal and Tottenham meet again at the Emirates with only a few weeks of the Premier League season remaining. Depending on how the year develops, league position, European qualification or even a title race could be involved.
Of course, nobody can promise what will be at stake months in advance.
That uncertainty is precisely what makes late-season football so appealing.
The Premier League’s final round is scheduled for 30 May 2027, so this fixture arrives firmly in the decisive part of the campaign. Premier League
How to Choose the Best Football Matches in Europe
There is no universal answer.
If you want the biggest global name, start with El Clásico.
If the stadium itself matters, consider AC Milan vs Inter at San Siro, a major night at Old Trafford, or a visit to the Allianz Arena.
For local rivalry, the North London Derby, Manchester Derby and Derby della Capitale each offer something different.
And if you want a match that may not exist on next season’s calendar, Champions League fixtures such as Arsenal vs Real Madrid, Barcelona vs Manchester City, Inter vs Liverpool and Manchester United vs Bayern Munich make a strong case.
There is another consideration people sometimes leave until too late: where you actually want to sit.
A lower longside seat gives you proximity. Higher longside seating usually gives a clearer tactical view. Shortside seats put you closer to the action around one goal. VIP and hospitality options, when available, offer a different matchday experience again.
The most expensive option is not automatically the right option for every supporter.
Planning a Football Trip Around the Match
Do not build a non-refundable itinerary around a provisional kick-off time months in advance.
This matters particularly in England.
Broadcast selections, domestic cup commitments and European competition can all affect scheduling. The Premier League publishes fixture amendments throughout the season and specifically notes the potential effect of UEFA participation on later scheduling. Premier League
A better approach is to choose the match first, understand how firm the schedule currently is, and then build flights and accommodation around it with sensible flexibility.
For Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, Munich and Rome, the match can easily sit inside a broader city break. Manchester and Liverpool work particularly well for football-focused trips. London gives you the widest range of possible fixtures and, in some weeks, the possibility of seeing more than one match during the same visit.
Find Your Next Football Match
The best football trip is not necessarily the match with the biggest television audience.
It might be your first night at San Siro. Your first Premier League derby. Real Madrid away in Europe. Barcelona at Camp Nou. Or a late-season match where the entire mood of the stadium changes with every goal.
That is why we would choose the match before choosing the destination.
